Welcome from Cheryl Stradling, Head of School
Ever since the age of 10, I knew I would be a school teacher. Every Friday in sixth grade, I would climb this huge hill beside my middle school to be the “teacher’s helper” and read to the first-grade class at Ringing Rocks Elementary. It was so much fun!!
Also during this time, my parents provided me with a private tutor in all academic subjects. They wanted to make sure that I got the personal attention they felt I deserved since I was in a large class of 30. My childhood experiences inspired me to go to Shippensburg University and major in elementary/middle school education.
After moving to Howard County, Maryland for a teaching position, I married a physical education teacher and had three children of my own. It was during this time, I noticed that my daughter was having difficulty thriving in public school due to an extremely large class size. After having a psychological evaluation, she was diagnosed with ADHD.
My world changed! I was driven to learn more and get my master’s degree in learning disabilities. Twenty-eight years later, I am still educating children with a learning difference by being the Head of School at Glenwood Academy. Our mission is to empower ADHD students with language-based learning disabilities such as dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyslexia, and language processing difficulties through a multi-sensory approach with a class size of ten.
Our faculty realizes and is sensitive to the fact that our students learn differently and need a different approach to teaching. It is not the child that needs to change but rather the approach. The children feel safe and are given the freedom and guidance to flourish into their best selves.
My greatest joy is seeing each student’s advantages flourish into highly valued strengths with the help of Glenwood Academy’s extraordinary education!
